Mary Ellen Mark
Mary Ellen Mark (March 20, 1940 – May 25, 2015) is considered by many to be one of the greatest documentary photographer of all time, mostly for her work on, as she puts it, ‘the un-famous’. Although Mark has photographed many A listed stars in her time she was most proud of her work documenting the everyday life struggles of people who are outside the spotlight of fame because she could get closer to them and make a more intimate portrait, people who are on the edge of society. She saw the unusual & preferred to shoot more of a strange image of things focusing on the tension on a moment rather than the easing of one, this is where her true passion in photography lay.
Mark also worked as a movie stills photographer and in that time has photographed many actors both on and off the set. Her list of famous people she photographed on assignment is a true A to Z collection and one that paid the bills for her to follow her love of the more interesting. She has held over 300 shows of her work and is listed in 71 permanent collections viewable to the public most of which are prestigious galleries. Mark was a true heavy weight in the photo world.
